The most important early sites in the 1990ths (besides Simtel which was at that time still owned by the US-Military as far as I remember) with tons of useful file informations were the finnish ftp servers x2ftp.oulu.fi (history here) and ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi (Timo Salmi's abandoning) (still exists, you only have to wait...) and ftp.funet.fi (still exists, you only have to wait...). Strangely enough these sites converted their content very late to the http:// protocoll that became more and more dominant from 1995 on. Most of the content of these sites exists today to my knowledge only partialy on mirrors. But it is always still worth to search for their content.
If someone should be interested in history: I still got many ls-LR.gz from 1989-2000. The net was very small then and easy to survey.
